ZCAT contains the data from the Southern Galaxy Redshift Survey (da Costa et al. 1987), which is an almost complete diameter limited sample of ~1900 galaxies, and the Second Southern Sky Redshift Survey or SSRS2 of da Costa et al. 1998, with ~5500 galaxies brighter than approximately 15.5 ESO blue magnitude.
But they're such a second-class citizen within Redshift that I wouldn't consider it a viable alternative to the lack of unnesting and flattening support.  I've used Python UDFs extensively since they came out, but haven't evaluated their performance characteristics in about 6 months. Please let me know if my analysis is out of date.
The syntax is straightforward. The date can be a date literal or an expression that evaluates to a date value. The EXTRACT() function returns a number which represents the year of the date. The following example shows how to extract the year from the date of July 22nd 2018:
